What is an APA?
An APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is a pre-paid fund — typically 20–30% of the base charter rate — that covers running costs during your charter: fuel, port fees, food and drink on board, and crew gratuity. At the end of the charter, the captain provides a full itemised account, and any unspent balance is refunded. It's separate from the charter fee and settled directly with the crew.

Maddy — HELM Greece broker

Your broker has been on these yachts.

We don't sell from a brochure. Every HELM broker has personally visited the catamarans they recommend in Greece — they know which ones have the best crews, which anchorages work for different groups, and which itineraries to avoid in peak Meltemi season.

When you enquire, you'll speak directly with your broker throughout — from first conversation to the day you step aboard.

Prefer a power cat? These are worth knowing about.

Power catamarans offer faster passages, more interior volume and a motor yacht feel. Particularly well suited to the Cyclades — where you want to cover ground between islands quickly and arrive in time to make the most of each stop.

"Power cats are an amazing crossover between a sailing cat and a motor yacht — all the comfort and speed of a motor yacht, but the fuel efficiency and space of a sailing cat. Especially in a world of high fuel prices, a power cat has to be the best charter option of the future."
Catamaran anchored in Greek island bay

Why most Greece guests choose a catamaran

01
Shallow draft — access to places monohulls can't reach
Greek catamarans can anchor directly into coves like the Kleftiko Caves in Milos, where deeper-keel yachts must stand off. You get closer.
02
Stability in the Meltemi
The Aegean's Meltemi winds can hit 25–35 knots in July and August. A catamaran's wide stance and reduced heel makes those conditions genuinely comfortable rather than something to endure. On a monohull, that's a rough day. On a cat, it's still a good lunch.
03
The deck space changes the holiday
A 60ft catamaran has more usable outdoor space than most people's holiday villas. Separate bow lounge, cockpit dining, flybridge sundeck — groups don't compete for the same spot. Mornings, meals and sunsets each have a natural home.
04
The platform for water toys
Greece is primarily a swimming and snorkelling destination. Catamarans have a wide, low stern platform — swim steps that sit close to the water, easy ladder access, space to rinse gear and launch paddleboards without queuing. The physics of the boat match what you'll actually do all day.

Questions about crewed catamaran charter in Greece

What does a crewed catamaran charter in Greece cost? +
Crewed catamaran charters in Greece start from around €20,000 per week for a 45–50ft yacht with captain and chef. Mid-range catamarans in the 50–60ft range run from €35,000–€55,000 per week. 80ft supercatamarans such as the Sunreef 80 are typically €80,000–€90,000 per week. All prices are base charter rate — VAT and APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance, typically 25–35% of the charter rate to cover fuel, food, port fees, and crew gratuity) are additional.
What's included in a crewed charter? +
The base charter rate covers use of the yacht, captain, chef, and crew. Meals are prepared on board by the chef and are tailored to your preferences. Water toys (paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling equipment) are typically included. APA covers fuel, port fees, provisions, and crew gratuity — your broker will walk you through what to budget for this.
When is the best time to charter a catamaran in Greece? +
The Greece sailing season runs May to October. May–June and September–October offer warm weather, excellent sailing conditions, fewer crowds, and more flexibility on itinerary. July and August are peak season — the Meltemi winds can be strong in the Cyclades during this period, so itinerary planning around wind patterns matters more. Peak weeks also book 6–12 months ahead, so early planning significantly improves your options.
Do I need sailing experience? +
No. With a fully crewed charter, the captain handles all sailing and navigation. You simply enjoy the experience. The crew plans the daily route around your preferences, manages anchoring, and handles all logistics. Guests don't need any sailing knowledge or experience.
How does HELM select the catamarans it recommends? +
Every catamaran HELM recommends has been physically inspected by one of our brokers — both founders are former captains. We assess the yacht's condition, the quality of the crew, and how well it matches the types of group we work with. We decline to list yachts that don't meet our standard, which means our shortlist is shorter — but more reliable.
Where can we sail on a Greece catamaran charter? +
Greece's main sailing areas include the Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca — excellent for new sailors, calmer conditions), the Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Milos — iconic but exposed to Meltemi), the Saronic Gulf (accessible from Athens, suits shorter charters), the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos — more remote, dramatic scenery), and the Sporades. Your broker will help design an itinerary based on your group's priorities, the time of year, and expected conditions.
Is there a booking fee? +
No. HELM charges no booking fee. Our brokers are paid by the charter industry on completion — you don't pay more to use us than booking direct. The benefit is access to our inspection track record and broker expertise throughout the process.
Should I choose a sailing catamaran or a power catamaran? +
Both work well in Greece, and the right choice depends on your group. Sailing catamarans are the more traditional choice — quieter, better range under sail, and generally a more immersive experience if your group enjoys the sailing itself. Power catamarans offer more interior space for the length, faster passages between islands, and typically a more motor yacht feel with larger social areas and sometimes a flybridge. If your priority is covering more ground quickly, or your group prefers not to sail, a power cat is worth considering. Your broker will help you decide based on your itinerary and group.
"The level of detail they put into matching us with the right boat was unlike anything I'd experienced booking a charter before. They genuinely knew every yacht on the shortlist."
